RADIOIMMUNOASSAY OF PLASMA CALCITONIN GENE RELATED PEPTIDE LEVELS IN DIABETIC PATIENTS

To discuss the clinic meanings of the levels of plasma calcitonin gene - related peptide (CGRP) in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) . Methods: The plasma CGRP levels were measured in 67 cases with NIDDM and 28 normal subjects by radioimmunoassay. Results: It showed that the CGRP levels were slightly lower in diabetic patients without complications than those in normal subjects (p > 0. 05, nosignificance). However the plasma CGRP levels were much lower (p < 0.05, p< 0.001, p<0. 001, respectively) in diabetic patients with complications than in those without complications. The decreased CGRP levels were related to complications such as hypertention and/or angiopathy. There were no significant correlations between plasma CGRP and blood glucose levels. Conclusions: These data suggested that the changes of plasma CGRP levels might be closely related to the development of diabetic complications.
