Abstract:Selenium contents in Chinese medicinal herbs of 310 kinds are analysed and determinea uring spectrofluormeter in this paper. Of which they are classified as: root and rhizoma (87 kinds) ; seeds and fruits (76 kinds) ; whole plants ( 32 kinds); leaves (6 kinds); flowers (15 kinds); barks (13 kinds); iana (12 kinds); resinous plants (4 kinds) ; algal plants (5 kinds) ; other plant species (7 kinds) ; animal species (22 kinds); entomic species (4 kinds) , minerals (27 kinds); of winch there are 30 kinds of Chinese medicinal herbs which can prevent and cure Kanshan disease, and also 30 kinds of them anti-cancerous tumors. The average value of Selenium contents is as follows: 0.132; 0.126; 0.095; 0.195; 0.141; 0.053; 0.037; 0.066; 0.077; 0.087; 1.042; 0.162; 3.879; and 3.260 as well as 3.543ppm respectively.It can be seen from the results that the average value of selenium contents in Chinese medicinal herbs preventing and curing Kanshan disease and anti-cancerous tumors is 18 - 88 times and 18-96 times higher than that in the plant parts, and 3-4 times higher than that in the animal medicines and equal to that in the mineral medicines. This clearly indica-ues that the trace element - selenium and selenium compounds play an important part in preventing and curing Kanshan disease and in resisting cancerous tumors. Also, the paper discusses selenium toxicity and lack of selenium in human beings and animals, its effects upon environment as well as application of selenium in preventing and curing diseases.
