Analysis of test results of mycobacterium tuberculosis with thick sputum smear

Objective To investigate positive rate of mycobacterium tuberculosis examination on thick sputum smear in tuberculosis control project.Methods A total of 10 696 sputum samples were tested from 1994 to 1998.The relationship between intervals(between the arrival of samples and the daub) and positive rate of mycobacterium tuberculosis examination,the relationship between dye density and putum smear quality were analysed,so that positive rate of mycobacterium tuberculosis examination might be improved.Results In the previous five years,the average positive rate was 20.5%.The positive rate decreased according to the following order: morning sputum > evening sputum > instant sputum.The longer was the intervals between the arrival of samples and the daub,the bigger was the break of sputum membrane.If the concentration of dye(0.06%) was doubled,the dyeing quality is better.Conclusion To improve positive rate,morning sputum samples should be used and examined as soon as possible.Optimal concentration of dye can also improve detection.
