Abstract:Glycoprotein IIB/IIIA receptor blockers given early to patients with ST segment elevation acute coronary syndrome improves early coronary patency, both in the absence and presence of thrombolytic therapy. Glycoprotein IIB/IIIA receptor antagonists can be given prehospitally to patients eligible for primary angioplasty and may enhance the efficacy in improving the outcome of patients undergoing primary angioplasty for acute myocardial infarction. Glycoprotein IIB/IIIA receptor blockers used as adjunct to fibrinolytic therapy have promising angiographic results. Large trials evaluating the efficacy and safety of these combinations compared to fibrinolytic therapy alone are underway.
