The TCM etiology of multiple sclerosis(MS) mainly includes six exogenous pathogenic factors, internal injury and fatigue, etc.According to the characteristics of the disease, in modern studies the pathogenesis of MS is generally summarized as deficiency of Kidney Qi, Dampness Evil infiltration, and deficiency of both Yin and Yang.In Li Dongyuan′s Pi Wei Lun,it is believed that Yin fire should be the product of Spleen and Stomach Qi failure, which cannot promote the normal circulation of Qi, and the Qi deficiency and depression would transform into Fire.Therefore, the core etiology of MS is the deficiency in root and excessiveness in symptom, in which deficiency is caused by Spleen Qi declining and excessiveness is caused by internal Yin Fire.Both in the acute phase and the remission phase Fire mixing with rheumatism, blood stasis, and Water-Dampness runs through the entire development process of the disease.
