The correlation of sleep apnea syndrome with chronic heart failure in elderly patients

ObjectiveTo explore the incidence of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) combined with chronic heart failure (CHF) in elderly patients and discuss relations between OSAS and CHF. MethodsOne thousand six hundred and fifty eight cadres aged over 60 years were screened. Polysomnography (PSG) results were collected. Clinical data and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) level were analyzed. ResultsOSAS incidence was 32.1% (531 cases) in all retired cadres. CHF incidence was 6.76% (112 cases). CHF incidence in normal, slight OSAS, mild OSAS and severe OSAS group was 5.4%, 6.1%, 10.0% and 17.5% respectively (P<0.05). The lowest oxygen saturation were significantly associated with the occurrence of CHF (P<0.05), and apnea hypopnea index and blood BNP levels were positively correlated (P<0.05). ConclusionThe incidence of OSAS in elderly people aged over 60 were high. The incidence of CHF significantly increased in patients with OSAS, with an increasing trend related to severity of OSAS. Logistic regre ssion analysis showed that OSAS was an independent risk factor for CHF.
