Abstract:Objective:To investigate the relationship among apoptosis, intratumoral microvessel density (MVD) and prognosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patient Methods:Using terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase mediated dUTP biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL) and immunohistochemistry S P method, the apoptotic rate (AR) (number of apoptotic cells/total number of tumor cells), MVD and VEGF expression were examined in normal nasopharyngeal mucosa (20 cases) and NPC tissues (73 cases including 24 recurrent metastatic cases and 49 nonrecurrent cases) Results:Few apoptotic cells were found in NPC The AR of normal tissues was significantly higher than that of NPC(P< 0 01) MVD and VEGF of recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (R NPC) were higher than that of nonrecurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NR NPC) (P< 0 05) , while AR was lower in R NPC than in NR NPC Expression of VEGF significantly correlated with MVD, and AR with VEGF (P< 0 05) Conclusions:Apoptosis is inhibited during the process of nasopharyngeal carcinogenesis VEGF is involved in the angiogenesis of NPC, and angiogenesis influences the prognosis of the patient Angiogenesis and apoptosis may be useful to predict the prognosis of NPC patients
