Abstract:Objective:To investigate the clinical significance of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF)and the role of mononuclear cells (MNCs) in patients with acute myocardial infarction(AMI). Methods:Forty five patients with AMI and 13 normal controls were studied.Peripheral venous blood samples were drawn and MNCs were isolated from patients 1,7,14,and 21 days after onset of AMI.HGF levels in plasma and in a culture medium of MNCs were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Results:Plasma HGF levels within 7 days after onset of AMI were significantly higher than those of control subjects.HGF levels in the culture medium of MNCs (MNCs HGF levels)peaked on day 1 and decreased by day 14.A significant positive correlation was found between plasma HGF and MNCs HGF levels on day 7 after onset of AMI.There was a significant positive correlation between maximum creatine phosphokinase levels and maximum plasma HGF levels.There was also a significant positive correlation between maximum C reactive protein levels and maximum plasma and MNCs HGF levels. Conclusion:Maximum plasma HGF level is important in reflecting the extent of myocardial infarction.MNCs may contribute to the elevation of circulating HGF level in the subacute stage of myocardial infarction.Inflammation after AMI is supposed to induce HGF production by MNCs.Increased HGF level may contribute to the repair of ischemia induced injury of endothelial cells in patients with AMI.
