Analysis of the influence of hidden blood loss on curative effect of fixation in elderly patients with intertrochanteric fracture

Objective: To analysis the influence of hidden blood loss on curative effect of fracture fixation in elderly patients with intertrochanteric fracture(IFF). Methods:148 cases of elderly patients with IFF,treated by fracture fixations,were selected.All patients were randomized into a study group(74 patients) receiving oral iron supplementation for 6 weeks,and a control group receiving no anti-anemic intervention.Hemoglobin levels were examined and functional recovery was evaluated using the functional independence measure(FIM),on 1,3,7 days and 1,3,6 months postoperation.The parameters of two groups were compared. Results:The change of hemoglobin level and FIM score in study group at postoperation were significantly better than those in control group(P<0.05).Compared with control group,the hemoglobin level and FIM score on 1,3,6 months postoperation were significantly higher(P<0.05).The hemoglobin level on 1,3,7 days of postoperation in two groups were significantly lower than those of preoperation(P<0.05). Conclusion:Oral iron supplementation can effectively correct postoperation anemia and accelerate functional recovery in elderly patients with IFF.
