Analysis of some relative elements affecting the haemostatic and nasal packing materials after endoscopic sinus surgery

Objective: To evaluate the effects of three different nasal packing materials(Vaseline gauze strip,Merocel,Collagen/Gelfoam+Merocel) on incidence of major postoperative bleeding in patients who had undergone FESS combining different surgical site. Methods: A total of 291 patients who had undergone FESS from March 2008 to March 2011 were studied retrospectively.Patients with nasal septum,turbinates partial hepatectomy and sinus surgery were assigned to three surgical groups by different surgical site and packing materials respectively.The haemostatic effect was assessed during the recovery period. Results: Deviation of nasal septum and partial resection of turbinate in patients had high rate postoperative bleeding.Expansion compared with Vaseline gauze sponge packing had low rate of postoperative bleeding,Vaseline packing had the highest rate of postoperative bleeding. Conclusion: The postoperative bleeding rate is affected by surgery sites and packing materials,especially under turbinate and deviation of nasal septum surgery.Merocel has the best effect on hemostatic effect.
