Abstract:The contents of 5-hydroxytryptamine(5-HT)and dopamine(DA) in the brain microvessels(BMVs) at the early stage of rat brain injury were measured by using high performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detector(HPLC-ECD) and the influence of the 5-HT and DA level changes on cerebral edema was studied.The results showed that the levels of 5-HT and DA in the BMVs increased apparently at 0.5h,and were still higher than the control value at 6h after brain injury(P<01).The brain water content increased remarkably in the same time.The results indicate that the increment of 5-HT and DA in the BMVs might be one of the most important factors in the production and development of traumatic brain edema following brain injury.
