Abstract:Objective To compare the clinical outcomes of polyetheretherketone(PEEK)and titanium mesh in cranioplasty after decompressive craniectomy.Methods Clinical data of 293 patients with skull defect were analyzed retrospectively,and 58 patients underwent cranioplasty with PEEK(PEEK group)and 235 with titanium mesh(titanium mesh group).The shaping outcomes,postoperative complications,surgical time and cost were compared between the two groups.Results There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of complications such as hematoma,infection,seizures and volume of intraoperative bleeding between the PEEK group and the titanium mesh group(P>0.05),while the incidence of postoperative subcutaneous effusion,surgical time and surgical cost were higher in the PEEK group than in the titanium mesh group(P<0.05).There were accidental frontal skin imprinting and deformation of titanium mesh after trauma in the titanium mesh group.For skull defects with orbital and nasal roots,the repair with PEEK achieved a good effect.Conclusions Both PEEK and titanium mesh have good biocompatibility with few postoperative complications and satisfactory bone shaping,thus can be used as alternative materials for cranioplasty.PEEK is recommended for children,young adults and female patients with good economic conditions,especially for those with nasal orbital defects.
