Remission of Acute Myelofibrosis after Vitamin D_3 Treatment: A Case Report

This article is to report the successful treatment of a case ofacute myelofibrosis(AMF) with vitamin D_3. A male, aged 52, was admittedbecaused of severe anemia (hemoglobin 19 g/L) for more than 6 months. Hehad been treated with various antianemic agents and fetal liver infusionelsewhere for more than 20 months without any effects. He had to live onrepeated blood transfusions. After 2-month-treatment with vitamin D_3injections, remarkable remission was obtained and his hemoglobin levelsteadily rose to 93 g/L without any more transfusion. In the15-month-followup, the patient did well. He could take care of his owndaily life and his hemoglobin level continued to rise to 114 g/L. The bonemarrow findings improved correspondingly. No side effect against vitaminD_3 was observed. This is the first AMF case treated successfully withvitamin D_3 reported in our country.
