Calf hypertrophy due to a iatrogenic sciatic nerve lesion: case report

We report a case of calf hypertrophy due to a iatrogenic sciatic nerve lesion. Nerve damage may cause hypertrophy rather than the atrophy usually seen. Ephaptic transmission among nerve fibers at the point of lesion may cause the hypertrophy. The inability of the hypertrophic muscle fibers to compensate for the atrophic fibers accounts for the muscle weakness.

Sommario È riportato un caso di ipertrofia del polpaccio dopo una lesione nervosa iatrogena. Si evidenzia che il danno del nervo può causare ipertrofia anziché atrofia come comunemente avviene. La trasmissione efaptica fra le fibre nervose nella sede di lesione può essere responsabile di tale ipertrofia.
