| Abstract: | Four hundred twelve consecutive laparotomies were performed through a midline incision. By random choice 203 cases were closed with and 209 without retention sutures. Three wound dehiscences occurred when retention sutures were used, and none when they were not used. When careful fascial closure is performed with nonabsorable sutures, retention sutures are apparently of no benefit in closing a midline incision. |
