Health literacy in traditional Chinese medicine among students in a medical college and its influential factors

Objective To investigate the level of health literacy in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)among students in a medical college and its influencing factors,so as to provide evidence for the targeted improvement of TCM health literacy among medical students.Methods A stratified cluster sampling method was used to conduct a questionnaire-based survey in 2600 students in a medical college using the 2017 Chinese Citizens’Traditional Chinese Medicine Health Literacy Questionnaire.A Logistic regression model was used to explore the factors influencing the level of TCM health literacy among these subjects.Results The health literacy level in TCM among these students was 19.74%,and the five dimensions of TCM health literacy were as follows:57.52%for basic TCM concepts,4.00%for feasible TCM methods for general public,23.73%for TCM healthy lifestyle,79.40%for general knowledge of TCM culture,and 78.95%for TCM information comprehension.The regression results showed that the main factors influencing the level of TCM health literacy among medical students were place of birth,grade,specialty,mother’s education,history of chronic disease among lineal relatives,and TCM lessons(all P<0.05).Conclusions The TCM health literacy needs to be improved among medical students.The medical colleges should arrange more TCM courses or lectures and organize"TCM on campus"events.The families may create a good TCM health care atmosphere to improve the level of TCM health literacy among medical students.
