Abstract: | This report describes the case of a 56-year-old patient, who died 53 days after orthotopic heart transplantation due to myocarditis caused by infection with Aspergillus fumigatus and Toxoplasma gondii. Aspergillosis was diagnosed by transthoracic needle aspiration of a pulmonary infiltration. Endomyocardial biopsy showed toxoplasma pseudocysts. Autopsy revealed myocardial infection with both infectious agents. Despite specific therapy, myocarditis determined the fatal outcome in this case. The value of invasive techniques for specific diagnosis of infectious diseases in immunocompromised patients is discussed. |
