Abstract: | This paper deals with nursing intervention in cognitive retraining for the traumatic brain injury client in acute care rehabilitation. Clients in these settings usually receive therapeutic treatment during conventional working hours. The proposal of this article is to institute a more comprehensive approach based on nursing therapeutic intervention for cognitive remediation during evenings, weekends, and holidays. The nurse implements and maintains specific recommendations of the client's treating team, which includes the primary nurse. This results in a more intensive approach with maximum consistency of treatment, continuity of care, ongoing feedback to the therapist about the client's achievements on the nursing unit, continuous reassessment of the client's needs, and more involvement of the client's family. A case study is presented that exemplifies this concept. |
