Abstract:The source of steroid pollutants in two municipal sl udges: G from Guan gzhou and S from Shenzhen, and the stabilities of sterols, the precursor compoun d of steroids in the sludges, aerobic composting and anaerobic digestion were in vestigated. Domestic waste and wastewater was found to be the main source respon sible for the abundant steroids present in the two original sludges G and S, whi le petrochemical industrial contribution is negligible. Anaerobic digestion and aerobic composting were effective in degrading most of the steroids. However, mu ch contrary to the relative chemical stabilities of sterols and sterones, anaero bic composting can't increase the relative percentage of sterones in the ste roid s, indicating that microbe-mediated steroid transformational degradation might b e very different from a pure chemical stability-controlled one.
