Comparison of standard and modified Moore classification in lower cervical spine injuries

Objective To compare the clinical application of standard Moore classification with the modified one in lower cervical spine injuries. Methods Two hundred patients with lower cervical spine injuries were classified with standard and modified Moore classification. The diagnosis and management of patients with two classification methods were compared. Results According to standard Moore classification, 96 cases received operation, 20 cases were required, but did not undergo operation, 84 cases received conservative therapy. According to modified Moore classification, 98 cases received operation, 39 cases were required but did no to have operation, 63 cases received conservative therapy. There were differences between standard and modified Moore classification in anterior column injuries and anterior and posterior column injuries cases （χ^2=13.84 and 4.09,P〈 0.01 or 0.05）. Conclusion The modified Moore classification provides more easy and practicable guidance for diagnosis and management of patients with lower cervical spine injuries.
