Determining the optimal time for removal of urinary catheter after orchiectomy for prostatic hyperplasia

Objective To determine the optimal time for removal of urinary catheter after orchiectomy for prostatic hyperplasia patients.Methods Ninety-six patients with prostatic hyperplasia receiving orchiectomy were randomly divided into 3 groups of 32 cases.Urinary catheters were removed on the 2nd or 3rd postoperative day or when patients experienced urinary tract discomfort in group A,on the 7th day after operation in group B,and on the 14th day after operation in group C.Results The success rates of urination after removal of urinary catheter were 15.62%,40.62% and 81.25% in group A,B,C respectively,with significant differences between group C and group A,or between group C and group B(P<0.01 for both).Residual urine volume was significantly less in group C than that in group A and group B(P<0.01 for both).Conclusion Removal of urinary catheter on the 14th day after operation for elderly patients with prostatic hyperplasia receiving orchiectomy,can effectively prevent urination difficulties resulting form early removal of catheters,alleviate pain of recatheterization,and prevent urethral mucosal injury.
