Abstract:Objective To explore the relationship between social media information overload and the mental health of college students, and the mediating role of social media fatigue in it, so as to provide theoretical evidence for improving the mental health level of college students under the background of social media information overload. Methods A total of 594 students were surveyed with a social media information overload (SMIO) scale, social media fatigue (SMF) scale, and a depression-anxiety-stress scale-21 (DASS-21). The data were analyzed with t-test ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, etc. Results The average score of SMIO in 594 college students was (12.53±3.78), the average score of SMF was (15.56±4.55), and the differences in SMIO and SMF scores of college students with different genders and grades and social media years were statistically significant (P<0.01). The SMIO and SMF scores were positively correlated with the total DASS scores (r=0.345, 0.362, P<0.01). Social media fatigue mediated between social media information overload and DASS score, accounting for 21.24% of the mediating effect, and the confidence interval of 95% of the bootstrap was (0.034 to 0.199). Conclusions Social media information overload negatively affects the mental health level of college students, and social media fatigue plays a part of mediating role in the relationship between social media information overload and their mental health. Schools and families shall guide college students to use social media rationally and intervene in a timely manner, avoiding or reducing the damage caused by social media information overload to their mental health.
