Abstract: | Second metatarsophalangeal joint pathology is a frequent cause of forefoot pain. The final common pathway is loss of the static stabilizers of the joint. Early in the course of the disease, patients will demonstrate provocative instability and later will display fixed hyperextension. Surgical treatment is initially directed at releasing contracted soft tissues and supplementing the repair with a dynamic flexor to extensor transfer. Once a fixed deformity is present, bony procedures should be added. |
