Abstract: | Plastids in sieve elements of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) infected with curly top virus show ultrastructural changes, particularly in vascular bundles from older leaves. These changes include compaction of internal membranes, disruption of the proteinaceous fibrous band, and appearance of rodlike structures, granular material, and large amounts of osmiophilic material. Ultrastructural changes in sieve element plastids indicate that the curly top virus is detrimental to the sieve elements in which it moves. |
