Abstract: | Solutions of poly(methyl acrylate) in methyl acetate, chloroform, methylene dichloride and benzene have been irradiated by 2 537 Å radiation and changes in number average molecular weight measured. The effect of time of irradiation, solvent, polymer concentration and the presence of radical initiator have been investigated and it is concluded that the scission results from random absorption of radiation directly by the polymer without direct participation by the solvent which acts only as an optical filter. |
