Abstract: | Evidence that suggests an etiologic relation between the use of oral contraceptive steroids and the development of the oversuppression syndrome is reviewed. Investigation and management of factors probably responsible for the syndrome are presented. It is suggested that the problem is one of hypothalamopituitary dysfunction created by estrogen-progestin combinations. Condistions such as premature menopause, adrenal tumors, and Stein-Leventhal syndrome must be ruled out before a diagnosis of oversuppression is made. Clomiphene was found to be effective in restoring normal ovulatory function. |
