Expanding the Role of the Nurse: Nurse Practitioners and Case Managers

ABSTRACT: This paper discusses the impact of health trends on the structure of nursing organisations and the function and education of the professional nurse. It is argued that these changes are promoting a demand for autonomous nursing practice in the form of nurse practitioners and nurse case managers. The challenge to the profession is viewed in terms of making current health policies work for the achievement of professional goals, rather than against them.
