Investigation of Medical Language in Traditional Chinese Medicine from the Perspectives of Patient Perception

Abstract:Objective The purpose of this paper is to understand the current situation of the use of traditional medicine(TCM)medical language from the perspective of patient perception,so as to promote the further study of medical language theory of TCM.Methods A semi-open questionnaire survey was conducted among 129 inpatients in a large tertiary TCM Hospital in Guangdong Province by using the method of convenient sampling and objective sampling.The qualitative data were analyzed by thematic analysis,and the demographic characteristics and language types were described by frequency and composition comparison.Results 55.56%(65/117)of the patients thought that caring language made them feel intimate or relieved tension and strangeness,while 39.44%(28/71)of the patients thought encouraging language was the most touching.52.38%(11/21)of the patients thought that harsh language made them uncomfortable.63.16%(12/19)of the patients thought that harsh language and perfunctory language or behavior made them most uncomfortable.Conclusion Encouraging,caring,guiding and curative medical language can make patients have positive perceptual experience,while harsh,perfunctory,commanding and harmful medical language can make patients have negative perceptual experience.
