Abstract:Objective To compare the differences of serum sex hormone levels between autistic children and normal children(in 1~4 years old) and evaluate their clinical significance. Methods According to The diagnostic and statistical manual of mental illness-the fifth edition(DSM-Ⅴ), 35 children who were definitely diagnosed as autism were selected as a study group, and 40 normal children were selected as a control group. The levels of serum progesterone(P), estradiol(E2), testosterone(T), luteotropic hormone(LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH) in the two groups were determined by chemiluminescence immunoassay and the data were statistically processed. Results The average serum sex hormone T levels were(0.16±0.06) ng/mL of the study group and(0.08±0.02) ng/mL of the control group respectively, the average P levels were(0.10±0.03) ng/mL of the study group and(0.14±0.04) ng/mL of the control group respectively, and there were significant differences between the two groups(both P<0.05). There were no significant differences between two groups in the levels of E2, LH, FSH(all P>0.05). In the study group, there were no significant differences between different genders in the serum sex hormone levels(P>0.05). Conclusion The serum levels of P, E 2, T, LH, FSH and other sex hormones in autistic children are independent of gender factors. However, the changes of serum T and P levels may be correlated with the etiology and pathogenesis of autism, which is of certain clinical significance.
Keywords:child  autism  serum  sex hormone level
