Hypophosphatemia in patient with respiratory failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Phosphorus plays a key role in many essential biochemical processes of cell. It is not surprising, therefore, that disorders of phosphate metabolism lead to a large number of diversely and clinically improtant events, since phosphate is critical to virtually every physiologic function.Hypophosphatemia is not an uncommon laboratory finding abroad, it is seen in 17~28 percent of thoracic diseases, respiratory infection and respiratory failure.The present review focuses on the factors that regulate phosphate homeostasis, explores the pathophysiology, manifestations and clinical management of the hypophosphatemia in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and respiratory failure.
