A comparative analysis of the clinical efficiency between transumbilical single port laparoscopic cholecystectomy and conventional laparoscopic cholecystectomy

Objective To compare the clinical efficiency between the transumbilical single port laparoscopic cholecystectomy and conventional laparoscopic cholecystectomy(LC).Methods The clinical data of 86 cases who underwent transumbilical single port laparoscopic cholecystectomy(transumbilical single port group) during February 2009 to January 2011 were retrospectively reviewed and compared with the clinical records of 110 cases who underwent conventional laparoscopic cholecystectomy(conventional group) during the same period.The duration of operation,volume of intra-operation blood loss,number of cases who needed narcotics,frequency of complications,length of hospital stay and the total cost were compared respectively.Results The duration of operation of the transumbilical single port group was longer (47.1±26.6) min vs.(30.5±17.2) min,P = 0.001],and the cases who needed narcotic were less(3.5% vs.16.4%,P = 0.004),the postoperative hospital stay was shorter(2.3±0.6)d vs.(4.5±1.1)d,P = 0.000],the total cost was less (7368±515) Yuan vs.(8987±909) Yuan,P = 0.000] when compared with those of the conventional group.For the volume of intra-operation blood loss,there was no significant difference between the two groups(P > 0.05).There was no serious postoperative complications in both groups.Conclusion Transumbilical single port laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a safe and practical operational approach that has advantages and can partially replace the conventional LC.
