Abstract:Numerous studies have shown that anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) monoclonal antibodies are effective in the treatment of colorectal cancer patients with the wild-type k-ras gene. The k-ras gene encodes a G-protein that functions downstream of EGFR signaling. Since k-ras mutations result in abnormal activation of the EGFR signaling pathway, anti-EGFR monoclonal antibody treatment is ineffective for patients with k-ras mutations.
