Relations between immune activation and CD4 T helper cells death in HIV infection

The symptoms of AIDS are primary the decreased number of CD4 T helper cells and the deficiency of acquired immunity.Reports indicate that the decrease of CD4 T helper cells are due to the death of uninfected CD4 T cells instead of HIV-infected CD4 T cells.In HIV infection,the immune activation correlates with the killing of CD4 T cells and the progression of AIDS,which suggests the long-term immune activation may he attributed to the death of im-mune cells.But there is no direct evidence to prove this hypothesis due to the lack of good model to study HIV.In recent years,humanized mice and gene therapy have been established as new promising tools to study the mechanism of HIV in-fection,which would provide us clues to clinical treatment.
