The treatment of strabismus in Thyroid-associated Ophthalmopathy

Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy(TAO) is a distinct clinical entity and often affects the extraocular muscles.Diplopia is the commonest symptom of thyroid-associated strabismus and interferes with the patients’ ability to work,read and do other daily functions.But strabismus and diplopia managements still remain challenging in these diseases.These managements can be classified into two categories:non-surgical and surgical.The non-surgical measurements include systemic treatment,prism treatment,botulinum toxin injection and monocular occlusion.The basic surgical procedure is the weakening of restricted muscles but there is no standard surgical dose-response for rectus recession.Many patients remains under-corrections or over-corrections after surgeries of strabismus.This review discusses the various options of thyroid-associated strabismus and may help us to make a right and strategic decision.
