The preventive effect of compound glycyrrhizin on antituberculosis drug-induce hepatitis

Objective To evaluate the clinical effect of compound glycyrrhizin in the prevention of liver damage induced by antituberculosis drugs and to observe the efficacy, safety and reliability of the compound. Methods 460 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis who had been hospitalized during the period of January 2009 to November 2010 were assigned to receive antituberculosis drugs plus either glycyrrhizin (study group, 260 patients) or glucurolactone (control group, 200 patients). The incidence of drug-induced hepatitis was observed in the two groups. Results Drug-induced hepatitis occurred in 5 patients in the study group and 20 in the control group. 18 of 25 cases developed in the intensified period of treatment. The incidence of drug-induced hepatitis was significantly lower in the study group than in the control group(1.9% vs 10%). Conclusions Glycyrrhizin combined with antituberculosis drugs can significantly reduce the incidence of antituberculosis drug-induced hepatitis, which has important significance in the completion of the entire course of treatment, prevention of the occurrence of drug-resistant tuberculosis,and enhancement of the curative rate.
