Nutritional supplementation in patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Aim To evaluate the efficacy of nutritional supporting treatment on pulmonary funtion.Methods Sixty-eight patients with COPD were randomly assigned to treatment group（n=34） or control group（n=34）.The patients in the control group received regular therapy,while the treatment group received nutritional supplementation based on the regular therapy.The changes of dyspnea scores,respiratory function,30 and 60 day readmission rate was observed before and after treatment.Results The differences in dyspnea scores,respiratory function,30-day and 60-day readmission rate between the two groups were statistically significant before and after the treatment（P0.05）.Conclusions This study indicates that nutritional supplementation can improve the dyspnea scores and respiratory funtion in patients with COPD,enhance the survival quantity of patients,curtail hospital stay and readmission rate,and decrease the cost of being in hospital.
