BAO Peirong's experience of treating angina pectoris based on syndrome differentiation can be summarized as follows. The fundamental mechanism is deficient root and excessive branch. Deficiency is the foundation for chest Bi,and kidney deficiency is the root of all the deficiencies,and is the crux for the occurrence of angina pectoris. Therefore,in the treatment the root cause should be determined. Usually the pain is caused by poor nourishment,and hence the treatment should be tonifying kidney and strengthening Qi;deficiency also could cause stasis,for the blockage of collaterals will lead to unsmooth circulation of Qi and blood,which is the major mechanism of disease occurrence. Therefore,in the acute stage,the treatment should focus on the branch symptom,and the pain is caused by blockage,and the treatment should be regulating Qi and activating blood circulation,resolving phlegm and unblocking collaterals. In the treatment,traditional Chinese medicine should be combined with western medicine,and disease and pattern should be treated together. Sometimes tonifying kidney and strengthening Qi should be emphasized,while sometimes regulating Qi and activating blood circulation,and resolving phlegm and unblocking collaterals should be emphasized.
