Abstract:Objective To investigate prevalence of pathological internet use status and associated risk factors to health in the medical undergraduate entrants to provide evidence for health education strategies. Methods A cross-sectional, self-administered survey was conducted among 409 undergraduate entrants of Kunming Medical University. Prevalence of pathological internet use status was accessed by Young's Internet Addiction Scale. Other information including socio-demographic background, pattern of internet use, general physical health (SF-36) were collected. Influencing factors of internet-dependence were analyzed. Results There were 45.7% undergraduate entrants with internet-dependenee which caused adverse effects on their physical and mental health (P 〈 0.05). The younger, the longer they used the internet, the less time for study or work, the longer for online games or network communications, considered network as a way of entertainment and communications rather than a learning tool, the more easily internet-dependent (P 〈 0.05). Conclusions Internet-dependence is common in the medical undergraduate entrants and can cause adverse effect on student's physical and mental health. Effective prevention and intervention measures should be taken to improve the health of university students.
