Experimental Study on the Effects of Oral DMPS for Preventing and Treat lug the Subacute Mercury Poisoning in Rats

Rats were given an ip injection of 0. 5 (mol Hg/kg body weight as mercuric chlorideand an oral gavage of 0. 1 mmol DMPS/kg per day for five days. After giving an ip injection of 2. 0(mol Hg/kg body weight as mercuric chloride per day for five days, rats received an oral gavage of0.2 mmol DMPS/kg per day for three days. The effects of DMPS administered orally on urinarymercury excretion, mercury concentrations in liver and kidney, and activities of urinary ALP andNAG enzymes were determined. The results showed that oral DMPS could increase the excretion ofurinary mercury, decrease the mercury concentrations in liver and renal cortex, and reduce the bodyload of mercury. However, when mercury and DMPS were administered at the same time, DMPScould promote the re-absorption of mercury via intestinal track and increase the mercury concentrationin liver temporarily. The results showed that DMPS did not result in changes of activities of urinaryenzymes significantly and this may well be worthy of further investigstion.
