Affective disorder in an adolescent

A case of bipolar disorder presenting in an adolescent girl is presented. Differential diagnosis and treatment is discussed. A number of aspects of this case are outlined including the difficulties of diagnostic accuracy in major disorders of childhood and adolescence, the existence of biological markers, the implication of environmental stressors and cultural-familial factors. An unusual situation of reversal of index case identification is noted.
