| Abstract: | The major mechanism of diabetes and its complications is oxidative stress. Melatonin blocks the pathway of oxidative damage by directly scavenging free radicals, stimulating the activity of antioxidant enzymes and gene expression, inhibiting nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity, protecting mitochondria. It protects the body from oxidative injury and delays the development of diabetic complications such as diabetic retinopathy,diabetic nephropathy, diabetic neuropathy, diabetic cardiovascular disease. Melatonin will provide a new way for the treatment of diabetes and its complications. |
