The clinical blood transfusion management in Rh(-) patients

Background Rh (-)blood is a scarce blood type. In certain situations,the scarcity of Rh (-)blood makes the transfusion of Rh(+)RBCs unavoidable which could lead to alloimmunization,although Rh (-)patients should receive red blood cells (RBCs)from Rh(-)donors. The clinical blood transfusion management in Rh(-)patients is controversal until now.Objective We intend to outline a feasible and optimal policy concerning the clinical blood transfusion management in Rh (-)patients based on the currently available evidence.Content This review focuses on the blood transfusion protocols,policy concerning the use of RBCs and the cli nical blood transfusion management including autotransfusion and Rh immunoglobulin in Rh (-)patients. Trend The use of autotransfusion and Rh immunoglobulin will help to improve the clinical blood transfusion management in Rh(-)patients.
