The Reconstruction and Rehabilitation of Mandibular Defects

The reconstruction and rehabilitation of mandibular defects contribute to the life quality of the patients. The objectives of surgical reconstruction and rehabilitation include not only the restoration of appearance but also the recovery of functions, that is, the harmony of the occlusion-mandible-muscle-neural reflex. This paper investigates the current situation and the advancement of mandibular reconstruction and rehabilitation, including the basic principle, the frequently used methods, the main challenge of functional reconstruction, and the application of distraction osteogenesis and tissue engineering.
