Vitamin D and diabetes

The most important function of vitamin D is to maintain the balance of human calcium metabolism. With the further research on vitamin D, other biological functions of vitamin D have been explored,including its function in inflammation, autoimmune disease, insulin secretion and insulin resistance.Vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency was reported to be associated with diabetes mellitus. Vitamin D may involve in the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus by inhibition of inflammation, increasing the secretion of insulin, as well as improving insulin resistance. Clinical studies suggested that adequate vitamin D supplementation not only reduce the incidence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, but also improve glucose metabolism and relieve the symptoms of diabetes. It was proposed that vitamin D may play important roles in the prevention and treatment of diabetes mellitus.
