Abstract:Observation with the electron microscope of the degree and kind of aggregation among the particles of rabbitpox virus has shown that the plaque titer of fresh preparations is a reversible function of the number of aggregates present. Apparently plaques are initiated only by multiply infected cells in the L-cell monolayers. This could arise from incompleteness or deficiencies among the individual particles. The superiority of groups over single particles in plaque formation is so marked that single particles appear to be supplying different attributes rather than augmenting each other in providing sufficient of a single attribute necessary for plaque initiation.
