Relation of carotid artery IMT to serum MMP-9 and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase 1 in elderly hypertensive patients

Objective To study the relation of carotid atery intima-media thickness(IMT) to serum matrix metalloproteinase-9(MMP-9) and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase-1(TIMP-1) in elderly hypertensive patients.Methods A total of one hundred and thirty-five elderly hypertensive patients were enrolled in this study and divided into 4 groups according to dynamic pulse pressure:≤40 mm Hg(l mm Hg = 0.133 kPa,Group A,14 cases),41～60 mm HgCgroup B,57 cases),61～80 mm HgCGroup C,44 cases) and≥81 mm HgCGroup D,20 cases),sixty-five healthy subjects served as control group.All subjects' serum MMP-9,TIMP-1 concentrations and carotid artery IMT were examined.Results Compared with control group,the average IMT of the elderly hypertensive patients was significantly higher(P <0.05).No marked differences in plasma MMP-9 and TIMP-1 were found between patients of group A and control group CP > 0.05).Patients of groups B,C and D had significantly higher MMP-9 levels(P<0.05) and lower serum TIMP-1 level compared with control group(P<0.05).IMT was positively correlated with pulse pressure(r = 0.655,P < 0.05).Serum MMP-9 was positively correlated with IMT(r = 0.601,P < 0.05).Serum TIMP-1 was negatively correlated with IMT(r=-0.493,P<0.05). Conclusion There is certain correlation between serum MMP-9,TIMP-1 and IMT in elderly hypertensive patients.
