Abstract:There is no gold standard for rehabilitation of geriatric patients. Although many studies indicate that a multifaceted team approach, such as seen with specialized stroke units, may enhance outcomes for many patients, how these units achieve this is still unclear. However, the evidence shows that a comprehensive program of both medical and psychosocial support tends to result in patients achieving and maintaining higher levels of function, with less need for readmission, and shorter hospital stays. In addition to interventions aimed at improving function, rehabilitation includes assessment, goal setting, and provision of care to maintain the patient's status. More randomized controlled studies of rehabilitation programs are needed so that we can identify which programs are best for which patients.
