实验动物信息学是应用信息科学与数理科学理论、技术研究实验动物的一个交叉学科。其主要内容包括实验动物的科学与管理标准化、信息分类编码、完整基因组和功能的信息结构分析与比较、信息系统的研究。开展实验动物信息学研究，为实验动物在电子商务、专家系统、动物模拟替代实验、基因产业等领域的拓展和应用提供广阔空间。中国实验动物信息网络建设将有助于推进我国实验动物科学产业化、信息化、社会化的进程，是实验动物科学实现跨越式发展的重要领域。
