Analysis of the epidemiological characteristics of hand-foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks in Nanning, 2008-2019

Objective To learn about the epidemiological characteristics of hand-foot-mouth disease(HFMD) outbreaks, so as to provide a scientific basis for the prevention and control of HFMD outbreaks. Methods The disposal data of HFMD outbreaks reported in Nanning City from 2008 to 2019 were collected for analysis. Results From 2008 to 2019, a total of 104 HFMD outbreaks were reported in Nanning City. March-June and September-October were high-incidence periods. There were more reported outbreaks in urban areas(61.54%), while the attack rate was higher in counties(4.56%). 91.35% of outbreaks occurred in childcare institutions. The cases were mainly children aged 3 to 4 years(65.33%). The main pathogens were EV71(42.86%) and CoxA16(32.47%). 62.50% of the outbreaks were detected by disease control and prevention agencies through the epidemic network. The median duration of outbreak detection was 12 d. The median duration of epidemic outbreak was 12 d. And the median attack rate was 4.93%. Conclusion In the past three years, the number of HFMD outbreaks in Nanning City has shown a downward trend. Childcare institutions have been the key places for HFMD outbreaks. Full-time doctors should be employed in the childcare institutions. The training of HFMD control and prevention knowledge in childcare institutions especially private institutions should be strengthened and early detection, early disposal and early suspension should be accomplished to control the spread of HFMD outbreaks.
