Abstract:Recent mega-clinical trials of calcium channel antagonists in hypertensive patients revealed that treatment with calcium channel antagonists reduced the incidence of cardiovascular events of hypertensive patients compared with placebo. Additionally, it has been demonstrated that compared with diuretics or beta-blockers, treatment with calcium channel antagonists reduced the incidence of stroke. However, compared with diuretics or beta-blockers, treatment with calcium channel antagonists has been demonstrated to increased the occurrence of coronary heart disease and heart failure in hypertensive patients. Nevertheless, it is well known that sufficient blood pressure lowering therapy reduced the incidence of cardiovascular events in hypertensive patients. From this point of view, calcium channel antagonists seem to be necessary for the treatment of hypertension.
